history

___

Château Marrin has existed for several centuries, but the real origins of the domain are much older. The vestiges found during archaeological digs confirm a constant human presence throughout the ages, since Neolithic Era. Research has revealed that the site was once occupied by six villas and Gallo-Roman baths.

The first known traces of viticulture on the lands date back to the Middle Ages. The place, then named Saint-Jean-de-Craujac, is home to a chapel surrounded by vines. Its oldest mention dates from 1368 and it is completely demolished in 1780.

The current name of the locality, Le Marrin, is indicated in a register of 1647. Transmitted over time, the estate becomes the property of the Bouquey family, who works with the first winemakers of the Demur family. The Château Marrin wine is then rewarded: silver medals in Antwerp in 1885 and 1887, in Bordeaux in 1895, gold medals in Paris in 1889 and 1900, in Saint-Louis in 1904 and in Bordeaux in 1913, 1920 and 1923.

In 1937, José Demur buys the property. He will give it to his daughter Henriette and her husband, René Chêne. The two daring entrepreneurs carefully select new parcels and allow the estate to reach its current size. The family property continues its development and will be passed on to their daughter Françoise Chêne in 1985.

In 2018, Hugo Chêne, then 22 years old and sixth generation of winemakers of the family, takes over the estate. To continue the quest for quality initiated by his ancestors, he institutes a new dynamic and renews the work methods. Passionate winemaker, he works in all aspects of the production, from the work of the land to the work of the wine, to make a new wine, fruit of tradition and innovation, characterized by his personal vision of terroirs and great wines of Saint-Emilion.

RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE CONSUMER

___

"I work every day to carry on what has been bequeathed to me while respecting the values that have been transmitted to me: work, respect for the land, respect for the consumer. I constantly seek to better understand the nature with which I work, to use methods that are always more respectful of this environment, to find innovations that will allow me to always make a better wine, both during its tasting and in its production process.

At Château Marrin, it is very important for us that our wine comes from an environmentally friendly process. We practice a responsible farming by favoring natural techniques and products. For years now, we have been working the soils manually and mechanically without chemical weedkillers, for example."

MÉTHODES

VINIFICATION

___

For optimal wine quality, the harvest is carried out late to ensure grapes are picked at perfect maturity.

The wine is the result of meticulous ageing that blends ancestral know-how, innovation, and guidance from the finest craftsmen. It is crafted to be enjoyed in its youth while also ensuring optimal maturation over time.

The grapes are vinified in cement vats, with maceration lasting up to 40 days, followed by 12 months of ageing in wood and a further 12 months of refinement in cement vats.

The innovative winemaking process used at Château Marrin, employing compressed air, ensures a very steady fermentation rate and precise extraction of polyphenols. The wine thus obtained is intensely fruity, with a noble tannic structure.

TERROIR

terroir

___

16 Hectares

80% Clay   20% Clay/Limestone/Sand

95% Merlot   5% Cabernet Sauvignon

Located on the heights of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, the vineyard belongs to the Saint-Émilion appellation. It benefits from the oceanic and temperate microclimate of the region, which is very favorable for the vine-growing.

The estate's vines were planted in 1945. The exceptionally high rate of clay in the composition of its soils facilitates the absorption of minerals and nutrients by the plant, which allows to obtain a balanced wine particularly fruity.

Merlot is renowned for the fullness, structure, intensity and richness of the fruit it brings. Combined with Cabernet Sauvignon, which enhances complexity and structure, it produces a balanced wine, round, structured and fruity.

“Dark ruby color, shimmering. The delicate nose expresses a fresh black fruit that evokes black cherry, wild blackberry where a tint of violet arises. The aging brings nuances of sweet spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, on a background of precious wood, cedar with a balsamic touch. The palate delivers a silky impression, with a smooth and satiny texture. The weighted freshness is however mouthwatering, the tannin firms up the finish accompanied by nuances of roasting, of cocoa bean. Between spices and a juicy finish, a mid-bodied and elegant wine. Nice product.”
